2010 Forecast

Ducks, ducks everywhere!

I can't remember a year when the numbers of waterfowl are as large as we see today.  Every puddle hosts mallards, pintails and shovelers and teal with an occasional redhead.   Every year we have watched the population of resident greater Canadian geese increase substantially and this years hatch is just a bonus.    We had good old fashion North Dakota winter however, the wildlife wintered well. Spring scouting revealed good numbers of healthy deer with fawns starting to show up on the trail cameras in May.  Antler development is off to a good start.   Above average rainfall throughout the spring has produced lush grasses and row crops so the overall health of the herd is guaranteed.  We found some pretty respectable sheds so we're pretty confident another good hunting season is before us.      Check our trail cam pics.   We’re looking forward to the best year ever for quality white tail bucks at the NTR Ranch.

Bow Hunting for Whitetails

We take our bow hunting seriously and will accommodate no more than 4 hunters per week. Whitetails are plentiful and you will see numerous bucks and does every day. These are free ranging, wild deer with good genetics and just as smart as their eastern, southern and western cousins. They don’t get big by being dumb.

However, your Northern Plains experience will be unlike any found elsewhere. You will see deer at long distances and will marvel at the sparse cover concealing quality deer. We have erected tree stands in high percentage, pre-scouted areas of primary habitat, trails, food plots and attractive browse. Weather and wind will play a major role in where you will locate for your hunt. The ranch is large enough to easily accommodate 1 hunter per section (square mile) and there is no need to hunt the same area 2 days in a row. We reserve several areas for deer bow hunting only. No guns, no dogs.

NOTE: The 2010 deer archery season begins Sept 3rd and extends through January. Non-resident tags for whitetails are purchased over the counter or online.

Water Fowl

The North Dakota Coteau is probably the most prolific water fowl production area in the world and our land is located on this central flyway. Central North Dakota is a major staging area for the migration of geese, swans, and sand hill cranes so waterfowling opportunities abound on the ranch and in the area. Waterfowl regulations are set each year using a variety of criteria beneficial to both hunters and waterfowl. Be sure to review this year's regulations when you purchase your license.

Upland Game

Be sure to check out the recipes in the Camp Cook Favorites section to find out the best way to cook all the Sharptail Grouse, Pheasants and Hungarian Partridge you'll harvest during your stay. All of these critters inhabit the ranch plus additional lands are open to non-residents beginning the second week of the season.
